We are Irish citizens living in Britain, some of us recent immigrants who have had to leave home because of the economic recession in Ireland and the lack of jobs.

We want a President who will use that position to raise the issues of real concern to people in Ireland, and those of us in the Diaspora.

We believe that Martin McGuinness will speak for and act in the interests of all the Irish people, at home and abroad.

We are unable to vote in this presidential election - but if we did have that democratic right, we would vote for Martin McGuinness.

Australian support for Martin

I left Ireland in the seventies like every other person who left at the time there weren't  many other options, then as now the promises of freedom and equality that independence had  seemed to offer were lost in the long pockets of the gombeen men who masquerade as our leaders.  The only chance the ordinary decent people of Ireland have of a fair go is if they have the courage to vote for a candidate who is untainted by the greed and dishonesty of the last few years, Martin McGuinness stands head and shoulders above the crowd.

Michael Murray, Australia.

The man and the hour have met. Martin McGuinness' candidacy for President of Ireland is both timely and fitting.  As a child of a veteran of the war of independence, who through economic desperation had to leave Ireland, I am saddened to see that yet again Ireland's biggest export is her children.  We Irish in Australia are heartened to see that the corrupt political status quo which has brought Ireland to its knees has at last been challenged.  This courageous man, who has put his life on the line to bring peace to the north, is now seeking the presidency of Ireland.  If successful, he will seek to re-establish the promise of the declaration of independence of 1916, which has been sadly neglected by politicians to date.  There is no one more fitting to fill the role of the President of Ireland.  Irish Australia wishes him well.

John Little, Australia.

Áras an Uachtarán is no longer a retirement home for civil war political descendants, the last two incumbents have given the presidency the dignity and relevance it deserves.  Uachtarán na hEireann is a  serious  job for a serious person.  Martin McGuinness is a serious person and deserves serious consideration for the presidency.

Nicola Brandon, Western Australia.

Though unable to vote in the upcoming election for Áras I have been watching the various campaigns with  great interest.  Martin McGuinness has certainly set the cat among the pigeons.  It is with growing admiration that I watch him calmly deflect the hysterical criticisms of the old guard as they realise that McGuinness is a genuine contender for the prize.  Ireland is going through a period of great change! McGuinness is beginning to look like the person with the best experience to guide us through this period. Wish  I was there.

Paul Hickey, W.A. Australia.

I read Martin McGuinness's opening speech at his campaign launch and the one part that grab me the most was when he said he was committed to a united Ireland that not only included our Unionist brethren but openly embraced their cultural heritage and respected their right to exist.  Not one other candidate has addressed this crucial issue ,without mutual respect this nation will never have the prosperity that it deserves. McGuinness is a man of vision, compassion and pragmatism.  He deserves our support.

Kevin Guildea, Morley Australia.

Disenfranchised though the Diaspora may be, I can assure you that Irish Australia is watching with great interest as the battle for the Áras unfolds. The more the clapped out political machines of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail rail against the honest views of a man who has put his money and his life where his mouth is , the more the people of Ireland are attracted to Martin McGuinness. There is only one soldier of destiny in this fight and he seems to be more and more the choice of the Irish Tribes.  McGuinness.

Sean Little, Menora Australia.

Recognizing his enormous contribution to peace in Ireland, Irish reunification and the building of a new republic, we the undersigned Irish Australians support the candidacy of Martin McGuinness for President of Ireland.

Jim McKiernan, Dianella. (former Senator for Western Australia)

Jackie McKiernan, Dianella (former MLA for Joondalup and Wanneroo)

I fully support Martin McGuiness for president - this mans experience in working through how to change from prejudice and systemic advantage of unionists in disgraceful times even modern day unionists are ashamed of, gives him a unique insight that will help modern Ireland move forward.

Michael Doran

Leading up to these last few hours before the election I would like to show my support for Martin coming from Sydney Australia. My dad is originally from Belfast, and then moved to Dublin in his teenage years. From then he moved to Australia where him and my mum started a family. I explain all this because he has passed on to me a lot of insight into the history of Ireland, particularly in the year’s post 1916. And now, Ireland and its history, and more particularly the people who made this history is something I enjoy learning about.

In April this year, on a recent holiday to Ireland. My dad, sister and I bumped into Martin McGuinness on the streets of Ballycastle. I would just like to say how much of a humble, friendly and caring man he was that day when we met him. He took the time to listen to us, and he took the time to have a conversation that I think we all really enjoyed. I know on that day, my dad felt very privileged and proud to meet Martin McGuinness.
I understand what he has done for his country, and more importantly the people of his country over a significant number of years. He has stood up for his country when other people have not. I realize now that this election is not about the past, but about the future. But these qualities, and the passion Martin has always had for his nation in previous years will always remain with him forever.

The most important quality of a president of any country is that they have the peoples best interests at hand. In many countries around this world, such an entity rarely, or never happens. Yet here is a man who’s whole motive for presidency is the passion for his people. The passion and love for his nation. Martin McGuinness would be the perfect president. No matter what happens on the day Martin, you have made significant thousands of people not only in Ireland, but also throughout the world very proud of you and the country you stand for.
Go Martin! You are a hero of Ireland, which will be remembered forever.

I believe that this election is a moment in history, that cannot be missed.  It is a chance for the voters of Ireland, to put the future evolution of Ireland on a new course.  To take the power back from the millionaire bankers, speculaters, and microphone holders posing as journalists.  Martins record proves he is a man of the people.

A Chara,

I would like to add a message of support for Martin's campaign.

I emigrated two years ago, and moved to Germany. Since then, I have been writing my doctorate here. To this day, I am disgusted at the way the Irish government have been leaching off their own citizens. All of the other presedential candidates will happily accept the huge presidential pay. What Martin McGuinness is offering is perfectly in tune with the contemporary zeitgeist. The world is revolting against the fat cats who are grinding us into the ground. This is made clear by how the 'Occupy Times Square' demonstrations have spread to countries all over the world. If the regime of corrupt, backward, and deceitful politicians continues, the country will be robbed of everything good about it.

With Martin McGuinness' already proven ability to bring jobs to Ireland; we may even see many Irish emigrants returning to the country; bringing with them the skills, languages and knowledge which they have gained abroad. If Martin McGuinness was to be elected president, I would be; for the first time within my lifetime, proud of someone serving at a high level within the state.

As an Irish-American, I have followed for too long the struggles of Ireland's working people, be they urban or rural, as they try to find a measure of hope; a measure that is too often sought outside Ireland.  I have also watched from afar as the situation for Irish-Catholics, and in fact all people living in the Six Counties, has improved under the leadership of Martin McGuinness.  You can say that Martin is an unlikely politician, but he is a born leader, and that is what Ireland needs now the most.  Count me among Martin's strong supporters for President of Ireland.

On April 30, 1789, George Washington, a former revolutionary who had been vilified by the British government, took his oath of office as the first President of the United States.   Now recognized as a man of principles and honor, he is considered a hero of not only in the U.S. but also internationally.  Martin McGuinness, who has also been a champion of liberty and justice and, as did President Washington, followed the pathway from active revolutionary to pacifist politician, is a man who is truly a voice for all of Ireland.

Irene Jillson, Washington DC

Martin McGuinness has withstood onslaughts by the British – and pro-British – press for his presence at the events of Bloody Sunday.  This was a tragedy for which the British Government took responsibility only after the publication of the Saville Inquiry in 2010- 38 years after the event.   President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair both recognized the leadership qualities of Mr. McGuinness, engaging him in the peace negotiations that led to the historic Good Friday Agreement.  As President of the Republic of Ireland, he will build on his experience as Second Minister in the government of North Ireland and on his farsighted and steadfast dedication to the principles of the Agreement to engage with the population of the Republic in creating a strong and equitable economy This will be the foundation for a sustainable future in which all Irish can share.

Martin McGuinness is not an economist, but he would not be intimidated by them.  Nor would he fail to recognize when regulators did not provide straight answers.  Ireland is now afflicted by an economic disaster that affects the middle class as much as the poor.  The national economic crisis happened in the wake of intimidated politicians agreeing to assume as public debt the product of private greed and incompetence.  Fraud was perpetrated on the Irish public by bankers and the banks’ European creditors.  The Irish people need, and deserve, better moral and political leadership to confront international fraud and hazards to its sovereignty.

Martin McGuinness is viewed with genuine admiration in countries that value real leadership.  President Mary McAleese has gained enormous respect for Ireland because of her energy, focus and effectiveness of her efforts, including bridge building in which she and her husband were so productively engaged in the North.  Ireland needs similar vitality and application in the years ahead.  Martin McGuinness can provide that vigor and vision.

James P. Cullen, New York

Martin has shown a commitment to the people of Ireland over his lifetime. He has never taken the easy road and never has put himself before others. Ireland like the United States has had its challenges when addressing racism, sectarianism and discrimination in any form. Martin has had a steadfast commitment towards a unified Ireland, and not just the vanishing borders, but a true commitment to ensure that every citizen of Ireland (including the diaspora) have a say in the governance of the island. Martin has shown that he can be the voice of many and has broken down barriers along the way that no one thought would ever be possible. As a member of the legal community in New York, it is refreshing to see a candidate that comes from the people to represent the people if Ireland. The time is long overdue for a new voice and a new vision. Martin has exemplified both. As such, I would like to extend my fullest support to Martin in his most current endeavor to change the landscape of politics as usual.
 In Solidarity,

 Marty Glennon, New York.

I am an Irish citizen by foreign birth.  If I were permitted to vote, I would cast my ballot for Martin McGuinness.  I support his candidacy and Sinn Fein’s campaign for a New Ireland -- united, with liberty, justice, equality and opportunity for all.

Patrick Clark, New York

Irish citizens abroad should have the right to vote.  If I lived in Ireland I would be able to vote for the US president via absentee ballot. Irish citizens should have the same right.

Were I able to vote I would stand with Martin McGuinness.  Each step on the road to peace and unity is strengthened by a sturdy shoe that smooths the rocks, clay,  and gravel for others on the journey.

Martin's steps continue to move forward and they make the road wider and even for all Irish citizens.

I would like to express my support for Martin McGuinness’s candidacy for President of Ireland.

During the last few years, Martin has demonstrated not only his astuteness as a politician, but also his capacity to act as a statesman.  Again and again, he has demonstrated his courage, talent and vision.

I believe that Martin is the only candidate who is both committed to social justice and is truly inclusive in his approach. We can all learn from the past and use it to build a better future. Ibelieve that Martin is the person to lead us to that better future.

Professor Christine Kinealy, author of War and Peace, Ireland Since the 1960 (2010), New Jersey.

We here in American have watched with dismay and disappointment as the economy in Ireland continues to deteriorate and flounder.  None of the present politicians seem to care or do anything about it.

There is no leadership and the politicians seem only interested in lining their own pockets, and not worrying about the people they were elected to represent. The greed of some of these people in office and sections of the private sector needs to be stopped now to allow Ireland to be returned to its rightful place in the world.

To accomplish this we need new leadership with a strong leader who is not afraid to make tough or unpopular decisions, have the proven ability to lead and bring people together, to create new jobs, bring back jobs which have been lost and attract new investment to put Ireland back on its feet.

That person is Martin McGuinness who will lead us as the next President of Ireland.

Seán Pender, New Jersey

I have been following the campaign for the President of Ireland. The office of President requires interaction with heads of state throughout the world. Martin McGuinness has been dealing with heads of state for many years, something that none of the other candidates have done. Martin also has already proven himself as a very effective leader in his position as Deputy First Minister in the six counties. In addition he has that unique charisma that makes a leader much more effective.

I have yet to see any criticism of his qualifications for the office. All the negative publicity directed against him relates to his involvement with the IRA and this is said to disqualify him from office. The people spouting this negative publicity apparently skipped the history courses during their school years. Who do they think led the country for many years?

As you know, in the North, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinnness has achieved world-wide recognition as a peace campaigner and negotiator, bringing all peoples together, both republican and loyalist alike. With Stormont now functioning, all sides agree that Martin is their most competent, effective, and popular executive in government, an achievement not to be taken lightly. The common goal of you and I in Irish America, as it is with most political parties in Ireland, (FF, F, SDLP, SF), is to achieve a united, sovereign, and independent Ireland. With all of us and all parties working together to elect Martin as President of the Republic of Ireland, we now have a major opportunity to move closer to achieving this goal. Think about it.  A united, sovereign Ireland. Achievable.

President Martin McGuinness of the Republic of Ireland.  YES!!

Jack Bermingham, Boston.

Dear Martin,
Just a note from one of your most enthusiastic American fans to say GOOD LUCK in the coming elections!

Rose Styron , Massachusetts.

Hi Martin,

We believe Martin has in abundance the experience necessary to promote Ireland to the fullest on the world stage.

As a senior statesman and peacemaker who has taken many personal risks and sacrifices for Ireland, we,  from this American Republic to yours - the Irish Republic, symbolically endorse his candidacy.

We are well aware and supportive of Martin's career, first as a revolutionary patriot and presently as a world renowned Irish statesman for peace and unity on the island of Ireland.

I send my good wishes and support to Martin McGuinness .I and so many others here hope he is successful ,he would be a good and effective President and would truly be a President for all the Irish people. As a member of the Irish Diaspora I know that as President ,Martin would be inclusive of us all as we move into a new and better future ,a future that he has helped to shape. His work with the Unionist community has shown that he is a very strong and capable leader who has the ability to reach out to all communities and that he is a true and committed republican.

His persistant work in the peace process and establishing the power sharing govt in the north of Ireland highlights his political skills and his ability to forge relations with those of opposing views. We, as recent immigrants and decendents of immigrants in San Francisco send our support to him in this presidential election, he would truly be the voice of the people of all of Ireland and the Diaspora around the world including here in the US. “I spent my childhood in Galway and I have a deep love and admiration for Ireland- for her culture, her history, her humour and not least for the resilience of her people. In these difficult economic times for Ireland, a compassionate, vibrant, courageous leadership which understands how to bring opposing groups together to ensure the protection of the Constitution for all the citizens of Ireland, a leadership known and respected abroad which can restore faith in Ireland’s growth and attract robust foreign investment is surely needed. I feel that Martin McGuinness fits the bill and would be an excellent choice for President.”

Anjelica Huston.

I heartily endorse Martin McGuinness –I have known him for years and  I believe he would be a brilliant choice as President of Ireland. Martin has smarts, he has balls, and he has vision for the whole of Ireland. He certainly earned his political stripes in his skillful behind-the-scenes work on bringing about a cease-fire to the war in the North, making the Good Friday Agreement possible. As Minister for Education, and more recently as First Deputy of the North of Ireland, he has demonstrated his exceptional political talent in working successfully and productively, under enormous pressure , with  an array of oppositional parties mostly made up of people who would prefer that he be murdered.   No mean achievement. I guess most of the other candidates in the Presidential race might be able to claim the enormousl pressure of exercising their political chops while being snubbed by their enemies in the Dail bar.

I have known Martin Mc Guinness for many years and have always found him to be a man of his word who has demonstrated his brilliance and effectiveness as a skilful leader in a variety of different circumstances and positions.

Since the beginning of the Peace Process in the North of Ireland Martin’s unrivalled talent in working with culturally and historically opposed groups to reach consensus has been a critical factor in bringing the Peace Process to a constructive conclusion, and there is widespread support for his accomplishments in government as Deputy First Minister.

Despite his global recognition as a politician, revolutionary and peacemaker, Martin has always remained loyal to his roots as a family man in Derry and Donegal, wherein lies the source of his stability and constancy of purpose.

Martin Mc Guinness is widely admired and respected in the United States where I have often heard him compared to Menachim Begin and Nelson Mandela.

In my opinion, Martin Mc Guinness’ background, coupled with his passionate and abiding love of all the people in Ireland - for which he was prepared to die - make him an ideal candidate for President of the Republic of Ireland and Ambassador to the World.

Irish Americans have watched almost hopelessly as Ireland continues to endure an historic economic downturn.  This was brought about through greed and through a complicit government.  Ireland needs someone who can bring a new and positive vision to rebuilding the Republic, someone who knows how to create jobs and attract investment.  That person is Martin McGuinness.  He knows how to bring people together and he knows how to lead.  All Ireland and everyone in the diaspora can rightly be proud to have Mr. McGuinness as President of Ireland.
